What is the price range for portable gas detectors

04/14 2026

Don’t ask “how much is it” as soon as you start. This question is just like asking “how much is a meal” when you go to a restaurant. No one can answer it without naming the dishes. The price span of portable gas detectors is staggering, ranging from hundreds of “toys” to hundreds of thousands of “precision instruments”. The key depends on what you plan to do with it, whether you want to cope with the inspection or really want to save your life at a critical moment. In the safety industry, price often corresponds to reliability, and reliability is directly linked to human life.

Let’s start with the most basic single gas detector. If you just go into a sewage well to measure hydrogen sulfide, or go to the boiler room to see carbon monoxide, this dedicated machine is the cheapest. The price of domestic common electrochemical sensor models is usually between 300 yuan and 800 yuan. This kind of machine has simple function, audible and visual alarm, and a digital display. If it is broken, it will not hurt to change it. However, it should be noted that some products on the market are 200-300 yuan or even cheaper, using inferior sensors, with slow response, short service life and even no formal explosion-proof certification. If you buy that kind of thing, you will be sent a fine to the safety supervision department, which will not save you if something really happens, because it may “strike” before the concentration of toxic gas exceeds the standard. If it is an imported brand of single gas meter, the price will jump to about 1,500 yuan to 2,500 yuan. The price is expensive in the stability of the sensor, explosion-proof grade and reliability in extreme environments. For example, in the environment of MINUS 20 degrees or high humidity, the reading of the cheap machine may have jumped, while the high-end machine can still work steadily.

Further up is the most commonly used multi-gas detector, that is, the compound type. The “four in one” often includes combustible gas, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide, which is the standard configuration of construction sites and chemical plants. Domestic models with high performance-to-price ratio are now very mature. Many manufacturers are equipped with imported sensors, but they are assembled in China, and the price is about 1,500 yuan to 3,500 yuan. This price segment is the mainstream, which can pass the security check, and the performance is completely sufficient, with the highest cost performance, and is suitable for most conventional working environments. However, if it is the original installation machine of foreign brands, the price is usually between 4,000 yuan and 9,000 yuan, and the main models are mostly around 6,000 yuan. The expensive parts are mainly brand premium, stronger shell design, smarter data recording function, wireless transmission capacity and global joint guarantee service network. In some multinational projects or enterprises with high requirements for equipment management, these additional functions are just needed, because they can send data back to the central control room in real time, so that the rear can keep abreast of the safety of people in front.

If the test gas you need is special, the price will soar. For example, an instrument with photoionization to detect volatile organic compounds can detect trace toxic gases such as benzene and toluene, and its sensitivity is extremely high, reaching ppb level. Domestic five-in-one and six-in-one instruments with this function usually cost 8,000 yuan to 15,000 yuan, while imported ones easily break through 20,000 yuan or even reach 30,000 yuan. If you want to measure carbon dioxide or combustible gas in an oxygen-deficient environment, the ordinary catalytic combustion sensor does not work in oxygen-deficient, so you have to use an infrared sensor. The price of this single instrument is often more than 10,000 yuan. If it is a high-precision portable laser methane detector, it can detect the leakage at a distance of tens of meters by using laser spectroscopy technology, and the price can even reach 50,000 to 100,000 yuan. There is also the hand-held Fourier infrared spectrometer, which can analyze dozens of gases at the same time, which simply moves the laboratory to the hand, and the price is as high as hundreds of thousands or even millions. Generally, only the emergency monitoring of the Environmental Protection Agency or a large petrochemical research institute can afford it, and it is used to deal with complex unknown leakage accidents.

In addition to the money for buying machines, you have to calculate the cost of “raising machines”, which many people have not figured out clearly. Many people only stare at the purchase price and ignore the follow-up investment. Sensors are consumables with a long life. Generally, electrochemistry is replaced every two years, and in three or five years of catalytic combustion, the cost of replacing the original sensor may cost hundreds to thousands. Every year, we have to do measurement calibration and find a qualified third-party agency to report, and it costs hundreds of dollars at a time. If you buy an imported model that is extremely unpopular, you will have to wait for half a year to buy an accessory later. At that time, the machine will be scrap iron, and even the whole machine will be scrapped because of the suspension of production. In addition, the charging base of some high-end models and the licensing fee of data acquisition software are also invisible long-term costs.

So, don’t just look at the price tag. If it is to cope with simple daily inspections, choose a reliable domestic four-in-one that can be done within two thousand yuan, which is both compliant and practical; If it is to enter a high-risk confined space, or involves complex chemical leakage investigation, then these thousands or even tens of thousands of investments cannot be saved. After all, in terms of safety, the biggest advantage is not to have an accident. Think carefully before buying: Do you want to buy an “alarm” that can only sound light, or a “life-saving symbol” that is absolutely reliable in do or die? The prices of the two are doomed to be different, and the peace of mind brought by the latter is hard to measure by any money.
