How to Choose a Toxic Gas Detector Without Getting Burned?
Toxic gas detectors cannot be selected “alike.”. The right choice of this kind of work may be a protector, and the wrong choice may be the end of everything.
Now there are many gas detectors on the market, with prices ranging from hundreds to thousands. With the arrival of the first year of AI, many sales will say: “lifetime free protection”, “German imported core”, “AI intelligent analysis”… It feels very huge. Many bosses do not know when to change the alarm after buying a batch of garbage.

Today, combined with the current environment in 2026, talk about how to select the appropriate gas detector.
1、 Sensor is the core, not just the appearance
Many people find that the shell is not strong, the screen is not large and cool enough, in fact, these are not necessary work. The heart of the device is the heart sensor.
Electrochemical sensor is the main stream for toxic gas detection, such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide. I have seen too many projects bought a small domestic factory at a cheap price. It is OK to just use it. After three months, it drifted heavily and was reported by mistake every day. Eventually there was no choice but to import. To be honest, the sensor is really a dollar for a dollar. Ask about the service life. Generally, the imported ones can last for 2-3 years, while the domestic ones with low price may be inaccurate at the beginning of half a year.
Infrared sensors are expensive, but stable. If the budget is enough, measure the carbon dioxide under complex working conditions, and directly use the infrared ray to save the mind.
There is another pit to note: interpenetration agitation. When some instruments measure carbon monoxide, if there is hydrogen around, the readings will jump. Be sure to ask the seller before buying: “Is there any disturbance immunity compensation for this thing?” Don’t wait for things to go wrong.
2、 Authentication certificate, no consideration for this
It is unpleasant to speak. Don’t touch the gas detector without explosion-proof certificate. It’s not bluff, it’s legal.
For domestic use, explosion-proof certificate must be provided and Ex mark shall be clear. The inspection will be more strict in 2026, and the real goods can be found on the official website of the Emergency Handling Department. I’ve seen manufacturers fool people with expired certificates, or perhaps just PS one. Once found, the whole project has to be rectified.
If the foreign enterprise may have export business, ATEX, IECEx, UL and other world certification are also required. It is not to say that domestic products are not acceptable, but some Party A recognizes this.
There is also a metrological calibration certificate, and don’t trust the factory test report produced by the manufacturer. It has no legal effect. It must be stamped by the third party metering organization, and it can be obtained by the safety supervisor in the future.
3、 The scene is not correct, and even the best instrument is useless
That’s what I want to spit out most. Too many people want to buy an instrument across the country, portable can also be used as fixed, decentralized can also enter the confined space… waking up, really not.
Portable is for patrol inspection. Focus on whether the battery can support one shift (at least 10 hours), the alarm sound is not loud enough (the construction site is noisy), and whether it is fall resistant. I have seen workers knock down the instrument from the scaffold, and the shell is cracked and can work normally, which is called reliable.
Fixed type is installed on the wall for 24 hours of watching. It can be connected to the network to upload data. Currently, cloud channels are required. The protection grade shall be at least IP66 and IP68 for corrosive environment, otherwise, it will be completely rusted in half a year.
The most critical is the difference between distributed and pumped. It really can’t be mixed! Before entering the sewer, storage tank and pipeline, the pump must be used to cooperate with the sampling pipe, and the gas inside shall be measured by the person outside. The dispersion type has to wait for people to come into contact with the gas, when the concentration is high, people are now poured. This kind of experience is too much, the cost of blood in exchange for experience.
4、 After-sales is more important than price
Instruments are not bought and sold with a hammer. The sensor will be aging and needs to be calibrated regularly, generally once every 3-6 months. Ask a few questions:
Whether to send the calibration back to the manufacturer? How many days back and forth?
Are spare parts for sensors available?
How long can someone respond to a problem?
For a project I worked with, the alarm was sent late at night, and no one answered the phone call from the manufacturer, and the reply was given the next day. This kind of service is cheap. Don’t wait for safety.
It is rare to handle the documents. Now, the safety supervision should check the historical records. Good instrument supporting software can automatically generate reports and export them by one key. If it is necessary to copy the records manually, it is easy to make mistakes in time and effort.
5、 Price is rare
To be honest, too cheap to really touch. Four-in-one gas detector, if less than 2000 pieces, probably the rate sensor is innovative or stocked. Normal imported brand, four-in-one portable is 4000 yuan higher, and fixed type is more expensive.
But the more expensive the better. Some brands have too high price premium and too many functions to be used in practice. My proposition is: Medium price+reliable brand+good after-sales, this combination is the most stable.
Say two words at last
I have been doing this for so many years and have seen too many accidents due to instrument problems. Some instruments fail to alarm, and some give false alarm, which leads to carelessness of workers. In the end, the gas detector is a tool, and the key is still to be used and protected by people.
When selecting, remember the following points: authentication must be provided, the sensor must be clear, the scene must be matched, and after-sales must keep up. Don’t hoax people for saving that money.
Safety is really nothing like that. The right instrument makes me dependable.
